يهدف البحث إلى دراسة بناء الشخصية کما قدمتها ألف ليلة وليلة في حکاية الصعيدي والإفرنجية من حيث الجوانب الفنية، محاولًا تفکيک العمل السردي إلى جزئيات صغيرة؛ حتى تکتمل صورة الشخصيات في الحکاية، بالإضافة إلى توضيح وجهة نظر الراوي فيها.ويستند هذا البحث إلى المنهج الفني، الذي يرکز على توضيح القيم الشعورية، والقيم التعبيرية الموجودة في النص. وقد توصلت الدراسة إلى عدة نتائج من أهمها: أنمن التقنيات المستخدمة في رسم الشخصية أسماء الشخصيات ودلالاتها، وقد جاءت أسماء أغلب الشخصيات عامة؛ لتشير إلى طبقة معينة وثقافات مختلفة، وهو ما خدم الصراع کثيرًا في الحکاية. تفرد الصعيدي في الحکاية بالمناجاة الفردية، وقد جاءت کاشفة عن الجانب النفسي في شخصيته. برزت أهمية الوصف في الحکاية في رسم الملامح الظاهرية والداخلية للشخصيات، وجاء الوصف تکئة اعتمد عليه الراوي في افتتاحية الحکاية.

Abstract
    The research at hand is designed to study character- building as represented in One Thousand and One Nights with specific reference tothe tale of "The Upper Egyptian and the European Woman". In addition, the research highlights the technical aspects trying to deconstruct the narrative work into smaller parts in order to clarify the image of the character in a story and display the narrator's point of view. The research applies the technical approach which focuses on exposing the​​ present emotional ​​and expressive values in the text. The research has also referred to several findings; the most important of which is the technique used in drawing characters which relies on the names and connotations of the characters. Generally, the names of most characters refer directly to a certain social class or culture and this would surely serve the conflict within the story. Another finding is that the Upper Egyptian is distinguished for the soliloquy which uncovers the psychological aspect of his character. The importance of description in the story lies beyond drawing the apparent, internal, and external features of the character. The description of the character emphasizes the starting point which the narrator utilizes at the beginning of the story.
